A transcriptomic approach of salinity response in the euryhaline teleost, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Boutet, Isabelle; Ky, Chin Long; Bonhomme, Francois.
Euryhaline teleosts possess the capacity to osmoregulate under various environmental conditions (freshwater to hypersaline water). This physiological capacity is generally monitored using enzyme activity assays (Na+/K+-ATPase...), hormones quantification (prolactine, growth hormone) or their mRNAs expression. To date, few studies addressed the genetic correlates of adaptation to varying salinity at a molecular level in such fish. In the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, genetic differentiation was observed at specific allozyme loci between lagoon- and open-sea populations. In the present study, we investigated transcriptomic response of D. labrax to salt- and freshwater acclimation in two organs involved in osmoregulation, gill and intestine. By using...

Association between dental-oral health in young adults and salivary glutathione, lipid peroxidation and sialic acid levels and carbonic anhydrase activity BJMBR
Öztürk,L.K.; Furuncuoğlu,H.; Atala,M.H.; Uluköylü,O.; Akyüz,S.; Yarat,A..
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between salivary oxidative stress and dental-oral health. Healthy young adults, matched for gender and age, with (N = 21, 10 men, mean age: 20.3 ± 1 years) and without (N = 16, 8 men, mean age: 21.2 ± 1.8 years) caries were included in this study. The World Health Organization (WHO) caries diagnostic criteria were used for determining the decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index. The oral hygiene and gingival status were assessed using the simplified oral hygiene index and gingival index, respectively. Unstimulated salivary total protein, glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation and total sialic acid levels, carbonic anhydrase activity, and salivary buffering capacity were determined by standard...

Carbonic anhydrase activity in the red blood cells of sea level and high altitude natives Biol. Res.
GAMBOA,JORGE; CACEDA,RICARDO; GAMBOA,ALFREDO; MONGE-C,CARLOS.
Red blood cell carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity has not been studied in high altitude natives. Because CA is an intraerythocytic enzyme and high altitude natives are polycythemic, it is important to know if the activity of CA per red cell volume is different from that of their sea level counterparts. Blood was collected from healthy subjects living in Lima (150m) and from twelve subjects from Cerro de Pasco (4330m), and hematocrit and carbonic anhydrase activity were measured. As expected, the high altitude natives had significantly higher hematocrits than the sea level controls (p=0.0002). No difference in the CA activity per milliliter of red cells was found between the two populations. There was no correlation between the hematocrit and CA activity.

Catecholamine-induced vasoconstriction is sensitive to carbonic anhydrase I activation BJMBR
Puscas,I.; Coltau,M.; Gilau,L.; Pasca,R.; Domuta,G.; Baican,M.; Hecht,A..
We studied the relationship between alpha- and beta-adrenergic agonists and the activity of carbonic anhydrase I and II in erythrocyte, clinical and vessel studies. Kinetic studies were performed. Adrenergic agonists increased erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase as follows: adrenaline by 75%, noradrenaline by 68%, isoprenaline by 55%, and orciprenaline by 62%. The kinetic data indicated a non-competitive mechanism of action. In clinical studies carbonic anhydrase I from erythrocytes increased by 87% after noradrenaline administration, by 71% after orciprenaline and by 82% after isoprenaline. The increase in carbonic anhydrase I paralleled the increase in blood pressure. Similar results were obtained in vessel studies on piglet vascular smooth muscle. We believe...

Effects of early and late season defoliation on photosynthesis, growth and yield of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Khan,N.A.; Lone,P.M..
Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is characterized by a large number of leaves in the lower layers. These leaves are poorly illuminated, remain below the light compensation point and abscise at maturity. The effects of removing 50 % of all leaves taken from the lower half of the plant at 40 (pre-flowering) or 60 (post-flowering) days after sowing (DAS) were studied on photosynthesis and growth at 80 DAS and on yield at harvest. A comparison of stomatal and mesophyll effects on photosynthesis upon removal of such leaves was also made. Defoliation at 40 DAS resulted in a higher rate of photosynthesis (P N), growth and yield compared to defoliation at 60 DAS or the no defoliation control. The non-significant variation in stomatal limitation (I S), increased...

Effects of solar UV radiation on photosynthesis and enzyme activities (carbonic anhydrase and nitrate reductase) in marine macroalgae from southern Spain RChHN
FIGUEROA,FÉLIX L.; VIÑEGLA,BENJAMÍN.
The effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation during daily cycles on photosynthesis and two key enzymes involved in carbon incorporation, the carbonic anhydrase, and in inorganic nitrogen reduction, the nitrate reductase, of macroalgae from southern Spain are presented. During daily cycles, photoinhibition in several intertidal macroalgae, expressed as decrease in the effective quantum yield from the morning to noon time, was linearly dependent on the daily integrated irradiance. However, recovery, expressed as the increase in the effective quantum yield from noon to the afternoon, presented a different pattern; full recovery was found below daily integrated irradiance of 1.0 x10(4) kJ m-2. However, recovery reached only 50 % at higher irradiances. The...

Extra and intracelular activities of carbonic anhydrase of the marine microalga Tetraselmis gracilis (Chlorophyta) BJM
Rigobello-Masini,Marilda; Aidar,Elizabeth; Masini,Jorge C..
The activities of extra and intracellular carbonic anhydrases (CA) were studied in the microalgae Tetraselmis gracilis (Kylin) Butcher (Chlorophyta, Prasinophyceae) growing in laboratory cultivation. During ten days of batch cultivation, daily determinations of pH, cell number, enzymatic activity, and total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), as well as its main species, CO2 and HCO3-, were performed. Enzymatic activity increased as the growing cell population depleted inorganic carbon from the medium. Carbon dioxide concentration decreased quickly, especially in the third day of cultivation, when a significant increase of the intracellular enzymatic activity was observed. Bicarbonate concentration had its largest decrease in the cultivation medium in the...

Foliar application of 28-homobrassinolide mitigates salinity stress by increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis in Brassica juncea Acta Botanica
Alyemeni,Mohammed Nasser; Hayat,Shamsul; Wijaya,Leonard; Anaji,Abdullah.
Prior to sowing, seeds of Brassica juncea Czern and Coss cv. Varuna were soaked in water (controls) or in 50, 100 or 150 mM of sodium chloride (NaCl) for 6 h. The resulting plants, at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS) were either not treated (controls) or were treated with aqueous solutions of the hormone 28-homobrassinolide (HBL), which was applied to their foliage in concentrations of 10-10, 10-8 or 10-6 M. The concentration of NaCl showed an inverse correlation with the activity of nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1), the activity of carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1), chlorophyll content at 60 DAS, the rate of photosynthesis at 60 DAS, and seed yield at 140 DAS (at harvest), all of which decreased in parallel with increases in NaCl concentration. However,...
